What has happened?

You have written a report outlining the requirements of your media production.

To gain a merit or distinction there are areas that needs developing.

You need to demonstrate an understanding of codes of practice and regulation in sound production.

You have touched on this when looking at copyright and contingencies when covering a song

Now you need to identify how these areas relate to your project and add to your report.


For example, what clearances do you need to arrange?

Or, if you are using a sample who will you contact?

Publish a risk assessment to show that you understand health and safety requirements

Now you need to write about copyright. Find out what these organisations do and how they work;

Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS)
Performing Rights Society Alliance (PRS) 

Write about them and how they relate to your project.

You are aiming to fulfil the following criteria.

D1 comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional
standards fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production

I will be using the guidance below to mark you work.

P1: learners will simply list the requirements for a specified production, giving brief indications of where or how the specified requirements will be sourced. This list may contain one or two minor omissions but will be substantially complete. It will not contain any explanation of why the requirements are as they are and there will be only minimal consideration of codes of practice or regulatory issues.

M1: learners will show good understanding of pre-production requirements for the proposed production
and these requirements will be set out in some detail. Some thoughtful consideration will be given to relevant codes of practice and regulatory issues. Learners will be able to explain why the requirements identified are important and will give reasonably well-detailed explanations of how they will be sourced.

D1: learners will show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required. Learners will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced. They will give full consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.Fuller and more extensive explanation and a higher standard of presentation will discriminate between this grade and the merit.

You could consider using animation techniques.  We will be using the green screen in a practical session tomorrow. Consider how you could incorporate this into your own video.

David Bowie

We are going to look at the career of this icon of our time to explore the impact of his work on music recording and the music video. Part of you education is to understand the sociological impact of artists and use them as case studies.

Why was David Bowie so influential?

We are going to analyse two music videos and use them for some exercises that should help with your planning of a music video or recording.

His video for 'Lazarus' is now being re-interpreted in the light of his death. We looked at it last month as an example of an abstract video and it bamboozled us. The second one is 'Blackstar' from his final album released last Friday, days before his death at the age of 69.





Watch the video for 'Lazarus' again and jot down some ideas about the messages and meanings inherent in the video.


Bowie is most famous for his work in the 1970's when he pushed the boundaries of music and society.  His influence on that generation is clear in the outpouring of emotion and a desire to collectively mourn his passing on social media.

You may be more familiar with this video for 'Ashes to Ashes', particularly if you know the BBC drama of the same name which drew heavily on the iconography and music of Bowie to transport viewers back to the 1970's.

Before we watch it I want you to use the lyrics and to create a mind map with your own ideas as to how you would visualise the lyrics.

Make a word puzzle to mind-map all the words that sum up Bowie.

You are now ready to complete three tasks as part of pre-production for your music video

1) Make a word puzzle to show your ideas for your own music video.

2) Print the lyrics to your chosen track and annotate them

3) Create a mind map showing the development of ideas and any influences
