Twentieth Century editing

Orson Welles (USA)

Citizen Kane (1941)

This is often voted top film of all time by critics and those in the industry. For example,  the list produced by the British Film Institute and published in the magazine we take in the library 'Sight and Sound'.  With a background in the theatre and a public profile after radio plays such as 'The War of the Worlds', Welles used imaginative techniques such as dissolves and lighting tricks and experimented with cameras in this film which is about a media mogul. The much discussed final line 'Rosebud' is mythic in the film world. What was 'Rosebud'?

In this clip Orson Welles discusses editing. Use quotes in your essay.

The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)
Touch of Evil (1958)

It is worth also looking at a classic film by the director Carol Reed which stars Orson Welles.

The Third Man (1949)

Here is the trailer for the restored 4K version

The editing, lighting and use of the camera are interesting for us to study.

Mental Health in the Music Industry

As part of health and well being week this film raises awareness about mental health in the music industry. We often think of musical heroes as assured and confidentt when sometimes this is anything but the truth.  In the full glare of the media and with the lights shining on them people perform in front of a critical public.  Sometimes I see television like Britain's Got talent or the X Factor as cruel at times and exploitative, or at best unwilling to accept any responsibility for the well being of its contestants.

I recently saw Bill Ryder Jones in concert and he is an exceptional talent.  This film outlines some of the issues that he faced recently. A very brave and timely explanation that contributes to our understanding of anxiety and related health issues.

This was broadcast as part of Mental Health Awareness Week in May 2016 and guides anyone concerned about issues raised to the Mental Health charity MIND.

George Martin

Tributes to the the man that has been termed 'The Fifth Beatle' are being offered by many who understood the genius  that he had on perhaps the biggest and most influential band of all time.

Paul McCartney talks about his production of the classic 'Yesterday'.

http://www.paulmccartney.com/news-blogs/news/paul-mccartney-on-george-martin

One ofvthe strengths of The Beatles songs is how well they stand up as individual songs. they were then re-mastered and produced by Martin who embellished the raw song-writing talent of McCArtney and Lennon.

If you look for this song on you-tube you will see how many artists have covered this song.

In relation to our course it is his work as a producer that is worth studying. He took the ideas of Lennon and McCartney and helped them to turn them into classic songs.  Take some time today to search for the reasons why George Martin is such a key figure in the development of Sound Production.

For one of my favourite Beatles tracks Martin transformed the original idea to give it a totally different sound which fitted the psychedelic branding of the group.

Regulation and Copyright

Adele not streaming her new album on Spotify

Adele and PRS suing soundcloud article.

Adele sales hit 5 million copies in US

THis is a music video made by one of our A2 media students

What has happened?

You have written a report outlining the requirements of your media production.

To gain a merit or distinction there are areas that needs developing.

You need to demonstrate an understanding of codes of practice and regulation in sound production.

You have touched on this when looking at copyright and contingencies when covering a song

Now you need to identify how these areas relate to your project and add to your report.

For example, what clearances do you need to arrange?

Or, if you are using a sample who will you contact?

Publish a risk assessment to show that you understand health and safety requirements

Now you need to write about copyright. Find out what these organisations do and how they work;

Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS)
Performing Rights Society Alliance (PRS)

Write about them and how they relate to your project.

You are aiming to fulfil the following criteria.

D1 comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional
standards fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production

I will be using the guidance below to mark you work.

P1: learners will simply list the requirements for a specified production, giving brief indications of where or how the specified requirements will be sourced. This list may contain one or two minor omissions but will be substantially complete. It will not contain any explanation of why the requirements are as they are and there will be only minimal consideration of codes of practice or regulatory issues.

M1: learners will show good understanding of pre-production requirements for the proposed production
and these requirements will be set out in some detail. Some thoughtful consideration will be given to relevant codes of practice and regulatory issues. Learners will be able to explain why the requirements identified are important and will give reasonably well-detailed explanations of how they will be sourced.

D1: learners will show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required. Learners will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced. They will give full consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.Fuller and more extensive explanation and a higher standard of presentation will discriminate between this grade and the merit.

For a merit complete the following;

Publish a risk assessment to show that you understand health and safety requirements

Write about both of these organisations;

Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS)

Performing Rights Society Alliance (PRS)

Answere the following questions in relation to your own project

Regulation

How will you combat piracy?

How will you stop reproduction of your own recording?

What problems do you imagine you will encounter once your recording is released?

As an artitst how can you ensure your intellectual copyright is protected?

For a Distinction carry out the following tasks;

The internet has changed everything for artists. Use these articles to help you to explain how the internet has changed the music industry.

Guardian article about Prince and the music industry

Guardian article about Bowie and the internet

Extended task

Publish a risk assessment to show that you understand health and safety requirements

Regulation

Use this article to discuss regulation issues surrounding the music video.

Guardian article

  • Make a bullet point list of notes
  • Draw out relevant quotes.
  • Relate these issues to your own project.

Coldplay

This article has photos taken when Coldplay were making their new video using contemporary animation and CGI techniques.

You could consider using animation techniques.  We will be using the green screen in a practical session tomorrow. Consider how you could incorporate this into your own video.

David Bowie

We are going to look at the career of this icon of our time to explore the impact of his work on music recording and the music video. Part of you education is to understand the sociological impact of artists and use them as case studies.

Firstly read this article to gain some context  and discuss the following questions;

http://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/jan/11/david-bowie-dies-at-the-age-of-69

Why was David Bowie so influential?

Why does he mean so much to people?

We are going to analyse two music videos and use them for some exercises that should help with your planning of a music video or recording.

His video for 'Lazarus' is now being re-interpreted in the light of his death. We looked at it last month as an example of an abstract video and it bamboozled us. The second one is 'Blackstar' from his final album released last Friday, days before his death at the age of 69.

Watch the video for 'Lazarus' again and jot down some ideas about the messages and meanings inherent in the video.

Bowie is most famous for his work in the 1970's when he pushed the boundaries of music and society.  His influence on that generation is clear in the outpouring of emotion and a desire to collectively mourn his passing on social media.

You may be more familiar with this video for 'Ashes to Ashes', particularly if you know the BBC drama of the same name which drew heavily on the iconography and music of Bowie to transport viewers back to the 1970's.

Before we watch it I want you to use the lyrics and to create a mind map with your own ideas as to how you would visualise the lyrics.

What narrative would you create?

What images would you use?

Do you remember a guy that's been
In such an early song?
I've heard a rumor from Ground Control
Oh no, don't say it's true
They got a message from the Action Man
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too
I've loved all I've needed, love
Sordid details following"
The shrieking of nothing is killing, just
Pictures of Jap girls in synthesis and I
Ain't got no money and I ain't got no hair
But I'm hoping to kick but the planet it's glowing
Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Strung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low
Time and again I tell myself
I'll stay clean tonight
But the little green wheels are following me
Oh no, not again
I'm stuck with a valuable friend
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too"
One flash of light but no smoking pistol
I never done good things (I never done good things)
I never done bad things (I never done bad things)
I never did anything out of the blue, woh-o-oh
Want an axe to break the ice
Wanna come down right now
Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Strung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low
My mother said, to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom
My mother said, to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom
My mother said, to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom
My mother said, to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom

Make a word puzzle to mind-map all the words that sum up Bowie.

Artist, mime, music, Soul, Blues, Kraftwerk, Berlin, Pop, Nile Rodgers, Imam, Jagger, Merry Christams Mr Lawrence, Rebel Rebel, Luther Vandross,  Eyes, China Girl, Major Tom, Dimaond Dogs...

You are now ready to complete three tasks as part of pre-production for your music video

1) Make a word puzzle to show your ideas for your own music video.

2) Print the lyrics to your chosen track and annotate them

3) Create a mind map showing the development of ideas and any influences
